Aladdin - The Tale

The story of Aladdin originates from the folk tale collection “One Thousand and One Nights”, introduced to Europe in the 18th century by French translator Antoine Galland. The tale features themes of magic, adventure, cleverness and transformation. In 1992, Disney picked up the story to create a childhood favourite for many. The first ballet adaptation was done by the Scottish Ballet in 2000 with choreography by Robert Cohan. The ballet failed to maintain a spot in the repertory for the Scottish Ballet. A few years later, in 2008, David Bintley expanded the production for the New National Ballet of Japan, incorporating Chinese elements like lion and dragon dances alongside the Arabian story. Bintley’s Aladdin has become popular internationally, performed by companies such as Birmingham Ballet, Houston Ballet, Ballet West, and Queensland Ballet. Aladdin’s fantasy story sparks imagination and takes the audience on a magical ride.
