Rite of Spring and New Work - The Tale

“The Rite of Spring”, premiered in May 1913 in Paris, revolutionized ballet with its groundbreaking music by Igor Stravinsky and bold choreography by Vaslav Nijinsky. Commissioned by Sergei Diaghilev for Ballet Russes, this innovative work broke from traditional ballet, featuring complex rhythms and striking angular movements inspired by Russian folklore. The debut captivated and challenged audiences alike. The avant-garde music and choreography, as well as its un-conventional staging and costumes sparked a near riot.  Shouting and booing drowned the sound of the music to a point of police involvement. Despite the controversy the ballet quickly gained recognition and remains a powerful and influential masterpiece, celebrated worldwide for its daring artistry and lasting impact on the world of ballet.
